Dealing with life’s disappointment can be stressful, but you are stronger every time you have to cope with this feeling. When you are experiencing obstacles at work, remember these five steps can help shelter you through the rain. While everyone experiences setbacks and disappointments at work, they don’t have to take over your life.
STEP BACK AND REFLECT ON YOUR FEELINGS
Don’t try to hide or suppress your feelings. It is much better to be patient with yourself and free up your negative emotions. Try to put the name to the feelings, such as disappointed, resentful, or afraid. Labeling feelings helps us make sense of your experience. By clearly understand what you are feeling, you can learn to deal with it next time. You can ask yourself questions like: how can I feel better? How do I behave differently?
If there are ways you could have improved, focus on making these changes for yourself in the future.
DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY
Like Jim Rohn said “Sometimes you just lose no matter how hard you try” so do not take things seriously”. When something goes wrong despite your hard work and effort, just let it go and try not to take it as an attack on you personally.
Finding out that your work was not up to what you expect hurts, but it is about your objective performance, not about you as a human being. Even though some mistakes make you feel like the end of the world, they are not that bad as you think. Learning to deal with disappointment and frustration properly will make you feel better and ready to take the next steps.
SEEK COMFORT IN YOUR FRIENDS
Within reason, friend or your loved one will be here with you. Let out all of your negative emotions. Seek help when you find it is hard to deal with yourself, it is always a good idea to hear what other people have to say. After you release your thinking and emotions, you should feel lighter and calmer, not more worked up.
RE-EVALUATE YOUR EXPECTATIONS
If you are looking for perfection in life, I would say that you are wasting your life for unrealistic dreams. It’s worthwhile to check your expectations and to make sure that they line up with the real conditions. It could be that the job is not the right fit for you, especially if you are never recognized for your hard work. Adjust your expectations and be more patient to yourself.
DO IT ONE MORE TIME
No matter how hard you fell, always try to do it one more time. Each time you get up, you become stronger and more mature than you were before. Your persistence in the will pay off. Your determination and persistence may be rewarded down the road when you are not expected.
Learning to cope with disappointments is an important life lesson. When you have internalized this, you’ll be able to move forward with your career.
